This paper presents the problem of identity in contemporary metaphysics with regard to material entities, often relating the new analytic philosophy with ancient philosophy. In particular, the paper discusses some of the main theories concerning both synchronic and diachronic identity and identifies the latter as the basic theme of metaphysics. After defending the perdurance theory, the author puts it in the context of special relativity and, raising some issues on relationship between science and theoretical philosophy, he lastly defends a revisionistic conception of metaphysics and a moderate naturalism.
