The idea that a phenomenological hermeneutics of the self is limited in terms of knowledge and understanding of problems such as subjectivity, consciousness and the mind constitutes an idea that still persists today. With regards to the last thirty years of active research in cognitive science, neurobiology and analytic philosophy, the author intends to demonstrate the richness and importance of the relationship between these different disciplines and traditions. The work of Ricoeur is particularly concerned with the interdisciplinary study of self: it demonstrates how essential the contribution of hermeneutics to understanding self and identity could be.
